Art Exhibition: Per Kirkeby – A Creative Dialogue with the Byzantine Style

01.02.2012 , 00:00  -  08.04.2012

This exhibition offers a unique insight into the influence of Byzantine art on highly renowned Danish artist Per Kirkeby’s imagery.

Per Kirkeby is the most wide-ranging contemporary Danish artist. He not only works as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and architect, but also as a poet, critic and thinker. His works have been shown all over the world, e.g. in New York, London, Paris and Berlin. The Byzantine influence, apparent early in Per Kirkeby’s work, developed into a serious creative dialogue in the 1990s.

Against the background of the EU Presidency, this exhibition will be a unique opportunity not only to present a remarkable painter to the Greek audience, but also to comment on the bond between the symbolic ideas of Byzantine culture and contemporary art and its various expressions. During the exhibition period, a related series of lectures by Danish scholars will illuminate the Byzantine influence both in Kirkeby’s works and more generally in the Nordic countries, while Kirkeby himself will speak about his own experiences.
