Under the headline “EU Snapshots of Your Life”, the Danish EU Presidency held a photo competition primarily aimed at young people who have taken photos of how the EU affects their daily lives.
The competition was launched with high school debates in Aarhus and Copenhagen on 23 and 24 January, when approx. 1000 students debated EU dilemmas. The debates were introduced by Minister for European Affairs Nicolai Wammen and subsequently moderated by Mads Steffensen, known from a popular Danish radio show. The debates took their point of departure in young people’s daily lives with themes such as education, travel, the environment and food.
Young people have participated in the photo competition through the competition’s mobile application and Facebook page. The deadline for submitting contributions was Europe Day 9 May 2012. By then, a total of almost 3000 contributions had been received. A jury of Minister for European Affairs Nicolai Wammen, Danish EU Presidency Photographer Bjarke Ørsted and Photo Editor in Chief at Daily Politiken Thomas Borberg selected the winners of the three categories:
- Most artistic and creative photo: "The shore of the Atlantic ocean from a viewpoint in Nazaré, Portugal" by Zoltán Balogh from Hungary
- Best connection between photo and comment: "Europe is your suitcase - bring it with you" by Josefine Mølvig Exner from Denmark
- Funniest photo : "Typisch Männer" by Josef Hinterleitner from Austria
Along with Filipa Câmara Pestana from Portugal, who took the photo that received the most user votes, the winners were awarded a tablet in connection with the launch of the photo exhibition showing the 40 best photos at The Black Diamond, Copenhagen, on 7-24 June.
Furthermore, the photo competition has culminated in a photo mosaic offered to schools, city halls, libraries, embassies etc.
