Digital data creates new business opportunities

28-02-2012 16:59:00

More than 200 experts have in the last two days been gathered in Copenhagen to discuss what it takes to create a well functioning Digital Single Market in Europe. Innovative use of data can create new business opportunities for European companies.

Minister for Business and Growth Ole Sohn:

"In early February, my European colleagues and I set out clear policy targets for creating a digital single market. Today, Europe's experts have taken the next step, pointing out a number of issues that we need to address. I will use the results of the conference in future work to realise the growth potential in the Digital Single Market in Europe".

The experts point out, that in order for Europe to exploit the potential for growth in the Digital Single Market, consumers must have confidence in shopping online. It should be easy for citizens and businesses to get online. European companies must increasingly think in terms of digital business development. Productivity can be increased, and companies can gain new business opportunities, if they manage to use data innovatively. Among other things, there may be an economic benefit for Europe of €140 billion per year associated with the re-use of public data in the EU.

Minister for Business and Growth Ole Sohn:

"There is an untapped potential for growth in the use of data to create new innovative products and services. For example, by linking data on the age, construction, insulation and energy consumption etc. of houses, companies can identify homes in need of energy saving measures. The potential market value on energy saving measures is estimated to be as much as € 2.6 billion in the case of Denmark alone. During the Danish Presidency, we will advance negotiations on a revision of the directive on the re-use of public sector information as much as possible".
