The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes part in gathering participants from a number of Arab countries to discuss constitutional processes.

On the 12th of April a number of active experts and representatives from Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Morocco, Bahrain and Jordan will meet in Madrid to discuss constitutional processes which have been initiated in various countries during the Arab Spring. Constitutions are pivotal in the development in direction of fulfilling the population’s aspirations for democracy and it is therefore important to take an active share in strengthening the debate about the content in constitutions and about democratic processes. How is an inclusive process secured? Which institutional framework should constitutions create? Those are some of the questions the participants will be debating.

The seminar is conducted under the Danish EU-presidency and is carried out within the frame of the 200 anniversary of the enactment of the first Spanish constitution in 1812 in Cádiz.

The Spanish think-tank Fride is in charge of the conference and the Danish contribution helps to ensure a broad participation from the Arab world. The European Commission, The European Parliament and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs are collaborators in the seminar which will also have participation from Danish experts.
